Students who are experiencing personal, emotional, mental health or wellbeing difficulties can access support through the TUS Athlone Student Counselling Service. Staff are encouraged to signpost students to the service where appropriate. Further information is available at https://tus.ie/counselling/athlone/ or by emailing counselling.midlands@tus.ie.
What staff need to know:
- The Student Counselling Service is a free, confidential service provided by a team of professionally trained psychologist/psychotherapists. The service is available to all TUS registered students on the Athlone campus.
- We provide counselling appointments from 9am to 9pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 4pm on Fridays.
- The counselling administrators’ hours are 9am – 10.30am, 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm Monday – Friday.
- Students do not need a referral. Students can self-refer for counselling via a secure portal on our webpage: https://tus.ie/counselling/athlone/register/
- We also provide a Walk-in consultation service 2PM – 3PM Monday – Friday, no appointment required. Students just check in with the administrator.
- We hold emergency appointment slots from 3PM- 5PM Monday – Friday.
Referring a student:
- Staff can refer students by emailing counselling.midlands@tus.ie or phoning 090 64 68137. You should CC the student on the email. If a consultation is required or information is sensitive it is advisable to phone instead of email.
- It is advisable to please call ahead if accompanying a student to the service.
Training on supporting students:
‘Identifying and Responding to Distressed Students’ online training for staff is available on Moodle. Passkey is responding. We deliver in person workshops on identifying and responding to student in distress periodically through the academic year.
Flow ChartConsultation service for staff:
We provide consultation and guidance to staff in how best to support students. Contact the administrator at counselling.midlands@tus.ie or phone 090 64 68137 to arrange a consultation with a counsellor.
