TUS and SETU Launch New Certificate in Long-Term Conditions Exercise Instruction

TUS SETU
  • 17th June 2026

Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and South East Technological University (SETU) have launched a new Certificate in Long-Term Conditions Exercise Instruction, a pioneering programme designed to equip exercise professionals with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to safely support adults living with long-term health conditions.

The programme will be delivered concurrently by both universities, providing flexible access to learners across Ireland while supporting the development of a highly skilled workforce capable of delivering evidence-informed physical activity and exercise programmes in community settings.

The programme is a key outcome of the Physical Activity for people with Chronic Conditions (PACC) initiative, which commissioned the development of Ireland’s first nationally agreed Competency, Qualification and Accreditation Framework for Long-Term Conditions Exercise Instructors. The framework was developed by a multidisciplinary research team led by SETU and launched nationally in 2025. The initiative was supported through funding from the Dormant Accounts Innovation Fund via Sport Ireland, the HSE and County Carlow Sports Partnership.

The new programme has been designed to align with the national framework and will support graduates in meeting the educational requirements for accreditation as a Long-Term Conditions Exercise Instructor through REPs Ireland.

The launch of the Certificate in Long-Term Conditions Exercise Instruction represents a significant milestone in strengthening Ireland’s exercise and health workforce and advancing opportunities for people living with chronic conditions to engage safely in physical activity within their communities.
