Dr. Brian Murphy TUS

Dr. Brian Murphy, CChem MRSC, graduated from UCC in 1990 with a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry and in 1994 with a PhD in Structural Chemistry in the area of Coordination Chemistry and X-Ray Crystallography. Dr. Murphy is a Chartered Chemist with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS). On completion of his PhD he lectured in UCC, followed by taking up a post-doctoral HEFCW Fellowship at Cardiff University in Wales. Dr. Murphy has held lecturing posts at a several universities in Ireland and internationally, including UCC, Cardiff University, DCU, IT Sligo (now ATU) and UAEU, where he was an Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Head of Department of Chemistry. Dr. Murphy also has tutored with the Open University and served as a Faculty Consultant for AP Chemistry in the US. His current role at TUS is as a Senior Lecturer (SL1) in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biotechnology and is Coordinator of the MSc in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Analysis programme. He is a member of several committees within TUS, including the International and RUN-EU Sub-committee of Academic Council, the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Sub-Committee of Academic Council, the TUS RUN-EU Steering Committee and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biotechnology Marketing and Programme Committee. Dr. Murphy also represents TUS on the RUN-EU European Programme Academy (EPA) Missions and Joint Programmes Committee and the RUN-EU Staff Council, where he is current Chair. Dr. Murphy is Co-Chair of Chemistry Olympiad Ireland (ChOIRL), has served as Mentor and member of the International Jury of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), is an Advisor in Chemistry to the Teaching Council of Ireland and is a Member of The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Local Section in Ireland. Dr. Murphy is also a Reviewer with the Journal of Coordination Chemistry. Current research interests include the synthesis, characterisation and crystal structure analysis of novel coordination complexes with Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and structural systematics. He is also the Academic Lead at TUS for the collaborative science education HCI P3 project on Virtual Labs in Higher Education, involving MU (Lead), TUS, UCC, DCU and DkIT. The project won the prestigious DELTA (Disciplinary Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment) Award in 2024 from The National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, as well as the Best Collaboration Project at the 2024 Education Awards. Dr. Murphy has several research publications in the areas of coordination chemistry, X-ray crystallography, chemical education, has co-authored four textbooks and book chapters.
