Public Transport – Thurles Campus

Train

  • Thurles Railway Station is a major stop on the Cork–Dublin line, with regular services also connecting to Limerick Junction (for Galway, Tralee, Waterford). From the station, it’s approx. 1.8 km to campus (20 minutes on foot / 5 minutes by taxi or local link bus).

Town & Local Buses

  • TFI Local Link Tipperary runs services connecting Thurles with surrounding towns and villages.
  • Very useful for students commuting in from nearby areas such as Littleton, Templemore, Holycross and Horse & Jockey.
  • Services typically stop in Thurles town centre, with onward connections towards the campus.

Regional Bus Services

  • JJ Kavanagh Coaches: Routes between Dublin – Portlaoise – Cashel – Clonmel – Waterford pass through Thurles, with stops in the town centre.
  • Bernard Kavanagh Coaches: Provide connections to towns in the wider midlands and southeast region.
  • Bus Éireann: Routes linking Limerick, Nenagh, Roscrea, Cashel, and Clonmel connect to Thurles town centre.

These services give students flexibility for regional and intercity travel, linking Thurles with Limerick, Dublin, Cork, Waterford, and Kilkenny.

Getting from Stops to Campus

  • From Thurles Railway Station: 20-minute walk or 5-minute taxi.
  • From Bus Stops in Town Centre (Liberty Square / Thurles Cathedral): 15–20 minutes on foot, or transfer to Local Link for a quicker trip.
  • Closest Stop: Most buses stop in Thurles town centre, which is the key hub for transferring to campus.

Student Leap Card

  • The Student Leap Card gives 30–50% discounts on Irish Rail, TFI Local Link, Bus Éireann, and private coaches like JJ Kavanagh.
  • With Leap, fares are much cheaper (e.g. short hops on Local Link from €0.75, rail savings up to 50%).
  • Full details on how to apply and top up are on the Student Leap Card website here.

Tips for Students

  • Use the TFI Live App for real-time train and bus departures.
  • The rail station is the best hub if you’re travelling long-distance, but expect a short walk or taxi to reach campus.
  • Always use a Student Leap Card for the best value.
  • Plan for travel time between the town centre / station and campus, especially during peak hours.
