Name: Khalid Suhail Malla
Course: MSc in Quantity Surveying
Why did you choose to study at TUS?
I chose to study at TUS because it offered the right balance between academic depth and real industry relevance. The MSc in Quantity Surveying is closely aligned with the RICS and SCSI pathway, which was important to me as I wanted my qualification to be recognised and respected within the Irish construction sector. From the outset, TUS stood out for its practical approach to teaching and its strong connection with industry. I was looking for a university where learning went beyond theory, and where lecturers understood how projects work on the ground. TUS gave me that confidence.
What mode of study did you choose and why?
I chose to pursue the programme as a full time taught master’s. Coming from an international background with prior professional experience, this mode of study allowed me to fully immerse myself in the Irish construction and contract environment. The structured format of lectures, tutorials, group work and independent research helped me adapt quickly and develop a deeper understanding of procurement, cost management and contract administration within an Irish context. It was demanding, but it allowed me to grow both academically and professionally in a relatively short period of time.
What are the most difficult and most enjoyable aspects of your programme?
One of the most challenging aspects was adjusting to a new academic system while learning Irish procurement routes, planning regulations and standard forms of contract, all while managing continuous assessments and deadlines. At times, the workload required strong discipline and resilience. However, this challenge became one of the most rewarding parts of the programme. What I enjoyed most was the practical nature of the modules and the collaborative learning environment. Working with classmates from different backgrounds and experiences broadened my perspective, and the guidance and encouragement from faculty members such as Michael Mooring, Gus Ahern and Aidan O’Connor made a significant difference. Their industry experience, approachability and genuine interest in student development created a very supportive learning environment.
How has this mode of study helped you in your academic career?
The taught master’s structure helped me develop strong analytical skills, professional judgement and academic writing ability while continuously linking theory to real project scenarios. The programme strengthened my understanding of cost control, public sector procurement and contract implementation, which directly supported my academic performance. More importantly, it prepared me for professional practice in Ireland. The knowledge, confidence and guidance gained through the programme played a key role in helping me secure a Graduate Quantity Surveyor position with ESB during my studies, which was a major milestone for me.
What advice would you give to prospective researchers or postgraduate students?
My advice would be to approach postgraduate study with commitment, patience and an open mind. Time management is essential, but so is engaging fully with lecturers and peers. Do not hesitate to ask questions or seek guidance, as the support at TUS is genuinely there. Try to connect your assignments to real industry challenges and treat them as learning opportunities rather than just academic tasks. The journey can be demanding, but the personal growth, confidence and career progression that come from it make the experience truly worthwhile.
