Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has launched a suite of new blended learning programmes designed to unlock new career opportunities.

The new offerings, delivered through TUS’s Faculty of Continuing, Professional, Online and Distance Learning (CPODL), include two Irish language micro-credentials, a Certificate in Business English Language Acquisition for Professionals and a new Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Law.

The Certificate in Irish Language Proficiency (Conversation and Listening) and the Certificate in Irish Language Proficiency (Reading and Writing) are designed to help learners develop practical communication skills and achieve a recognised standard of Irish language proficiency.

Developed and delivered by native Irish speaker Róisín Nic Grianna, CEO of Coláiste Uisce in Belmullet, Co Mayo, the programmes place a strong emphasis on real-world language use, helping learners build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Irish.

The programmes have particular relevance for individuals considering a career in primary teaching. They can support learners preparing for the Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (TEG) examination, which is required for entry to Professional Master of Education (PME) programmes in primary education. They may also be of interest to those wishing to work in Gaelscoileanna, Irish-medium post-primary schools and naíonraí.

They are also relevant for those seeking employment or career progression within the Civil Service and wider public sector, where Irish language skills can provide additional opportunities, as well as for learners who simply wish to develop greater confidence in using the language in their daily lives.

Róisín Nic Grianna, programme lecturer, said:

“Our focus is on bringing Irish to life through conversation, communication and real-world application. These programmes are designed to build confidence and remove the barriers many adults feel when returning to Irish. Through interactive online classes, practical activities and authentic language experiences, learners will develop skills they can use immediately in their everyday lives, workplaces and future careers.”

Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS, said:

“The Irish language remains an important part of Ireland’s cultural, educational and professional landscape. These new programmes demonstrate TUS’s commitment to providing accessible learning opportunities that respond to learner ambitions, workforce needs and national priorities. Whether learners are seeking career progression, preparing for teacher education, entering the public sector, improving their professional communication skills or pursuing a legal career, these programmes offer practical and supportive pathways to achieving recognised qualifications and skills. From a cúpla focal to a Level 8 honours degree in law, we are creating opportunities for people to learn in ways that fit around their lives and ambitions.”

Alongside the Irish language programmes, TUS has launched a new online Certificate in Business English Language Acquisition for Professionals, designed to support non-native English speakers in developing the language, communication and intercultural skills required to succeed in today’s global workplace. The Level 6 micro-credential combines English language development with practical business knowledge, helping learners build confidence and enhance their employment and career opportunities.

TUS has also announced the introduction of a new Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Law, a fully online Level 8 degree programme that will welcome its first intake of students in September 2026. Designed to widen access to legal education, the programme offers multiple study pathways, including part-time options and support through the SUSI Part-Time Fee Scheme. Students will study a broad range of Irish, European and international legal disciplines while developing practical skills in legal research, legal technology, mooting and professional practice.

Dr Michael Tobin, Dean of the Faculty of Continuing, Professional, Online and Distance Learning at TUS, said:

“The launch of the BA (Hons) in Law represents a significant addition to our growing portfolio of higher education programmes. We are committed to widening participation in higher education and providing learners with opportunities to access university qualifications regardless of their location or personal circumstances.”

“Law touches every aspect of modern society, business and public life. This programme will provide learners with highly transferable analytical, research and communication skills while also offering a strong foundation for those considering careers in legal services, public administration, compliance, governance and a wide range of professional sectors.”

The programmes combine online teaching, guided learning activities and independent study, enabling learners to balance education with work, family and other commitments.

Applications for all programmes are now open.
