National Guidelines for Physical Activity
Healthy Ireland published updated guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour in 2024. Read below, bearing in mind these guidelines are meant as minimum targets.

Gym Facilities
Athlone
The gym on our Athlone campus is a large, high spec facility including over 70 workout stations, an indoor track, onsite shower facilities, expert staff who can devise a bespoke programme for you, and much more going for it. TUS students and staff can avail of a discount on membership prices.
TUS Athlone GymMoylish
The Sportshub is the official gym for students and staff on our Moylish campus and offers a discounted rate for TUS students and staff. It is a fully equipped Strength and Performance style gym with a wide range of cardio-vascular equipment.
This facility includes: Strength and Conditioning style gym, full sized basketball court, free custom training plans and personal training services.
Membership and payment can be organised at the Sport Hub reception desk.
TUS Moylish Gym
Thurles
The gym in Thurles is open to students and staff for an extremely competitive rate. The gym is a world class facility affiliated with UPMC. Please note the times during which staff and students can access this gym will depend on teaching timetables, as this gym is also used as a teaching space. Regardless of timetabling, the gym is always open from 7am to 9am before classes begin. Call into the gym for more information on times and how to join up. It’s the UPMC building behind the main building.
TUS Thurles GymStaff Walking Challenges
There are 2 national walking challenges run by Smarter Travel each year, which TUS staff can take part in:
- Walktober in October
- Marchaton in March
To take part you can either create or join a Team with colleagues and compete against other teams in TUS and nationally on the Leaderboard. The Healthy Campus office organises local prizes for participating teams in TUS.
