Finding a Home Away from Home: My Journey at TUS as an International Student

By Shean Hans Teoh

When choosing a university, I wanted more than just a place to study — I wanted a home away from home, a community where I could grow both academically and personally. I chose the Technological University of Shannon (TUS) because of its vibrant diversity and welcoming community, especially for international students like me. Being from Malaysia, I wanted a university that would challenge me academically while also offering opportunities to learn about diverse cultures. TUS stood out not just because of its strong academic reputation, but also because it felt like a place where I could truly grow both personally and professionally.

That said, adjusting to the Irish weather has been quite an experience! Coming from a tropical country where it’s warm year-round, the chillier Irish climate was definitely a shock to my system. But if you know, you know—there’s something magical about cozying up indoors while it’s raining outside. And trust me, you get used to it, especially with the warmth of the people around you.

As an international student, settling in was a mix of excitement and slight nervousness. But the friendly community at TUS made it easy. Whether it’s the warm smiles from classmates or the helpful staff on campus, I’ve always felt welcomed. My favourite place on campus has to be the library—it’s a haven of knowledge, and the peaceful ambiance makes it perfect for studying or just reflecting. The gym is another favourite, offering a wonderful way to stay active and release some stress after classes.

One of the things I genuinely appreciate about TUS is the support system for students. From academic assistance to clubs and societies, there’s always someone or something to help you feel at home. Being involved in campus activities also helped me make new friends and adapt faster to life here. It’s reassuring to know you’re not alone, and there’s always someone willing to lend a hand.

What I love most about TUS is the sense of community. It’s a university that brings people together, no matter where you’re from. Whether it’s in the classroom, at social events, or just hanging out at the student union, there’s always a sense of belonging.

One of my most memorable moments at TUS was during the International Students’ Welcome event. It was an incredible mix of cultures, music, and food, and it felt like the perfect introduction to life in Ireland. I remember meeting students from all over the world and realizing how similar we all were despite coming from different countries. It was a celebration of diversity and togetherness, and it made me feel truly lucky to be part of such a welcoming university.

The TUS Global Orientation

Another unforgettable experience was my first taste of Irish culture. The warmth of the locals, their humour, and the quaint charm of Irish towns—everything was new and exciting, every day in Ireland has been a delightful adventure.

Studying at TUS and living in Ireland has been one of the best decisions of my life. The university offers more than just education; it’s a place where you learn about life, culture, and yourself. For any prospective students thinking about TUS or Ireland, I wholeheartedly recommend it. You’ll not only grow academically but also make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
