In this Wednesday Research Forum Dara and Alan will converse about Dara’s bestselling memoir A Sheepdog Named Oscar in addition to their mutual creative interests, from Dara’s writing and Alan’s practice as a visual artist and a painter who works across disciplines. Dara and Alan both live on the Tipperary/Limerick border. Their practice as researchers and artists evolves from similar interests in the borders around art along with landscape and place. Both are ‘blow ins,’ relocating to the rural mid West. Common sites of interest include Glenstal, the Slieve Felim, the Galtee Mountains; the pathways that run through these land sites. As blow ins, the seminar focuses on re-location; wonder at the ‘new’ landscape opposed to the landscape of their ‘old origins and home (Alan’s in Meath, Dara’s in Galway). What does it mean to be a ‘blow in’ in a world shaped by digital algorithms and technologies? How can acts of creative expression and local community engagement resist market expansion and control of communities, resist the dominant ways of living in Irish life and culture?
