Electrical Engineering – BEng

  • CAO Points: 289

  • Campus: Moylish, Limerick City

  • years: 3

Course Overview

This programme is designed to produce graduates with a detailed knowledge of Electrical, Control & Automation Engineering and the skills necessary to identify, formulate, and solve industrial electrical & automation engineering problems. The Electrical Engineer is required to lead fault-finding and trouble-shooting of complex electrical and control equipment and to work with colleagues to achieve project success ontime and within the resources available.

This programme provides a broad foundation in electrical and automation engineering through combined classroom and laboratory work and prepares the student for entering the profession of electrical
and automation engineering as well as for further study at graduate level. The curriculum is built around a strong basic core of mathematics, engineering science, controls and electrical engineering topics.

The opportunities also exist for students to work in industry with placement on Year 3 of the programme. This programme includes practical learning in well-equipped modern laboratories building the practical aptitude of the learners and introducing them to key relevant technologies and knowledge necessary for employment in the electrical and automation sector. The departmentmaintains close links with local industries and consequently many of our graduates are offered employment even before graduation.

Direct entry to Year 2 is possible for suitably qualified Electricians seeking to upgrade their skills and qualifications in order to transfer to jobs in the industrial sector.

This module provides a foundation in mathematical principles: arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, complex numbers, elementary calculus and statistics. The theory is kept to a minimum, with problem-solving used extensively to establish and exemplify the theory. The material will provide engineering applications; the learner will be able to apply standard mathematical techniques to analyse and solve electrical, electronic and related engineering problems.

  • Engineering Science

    Credits: 5

The aim of the module is to introduce students to a broad knowledge of fundamental Principles and Practical applications in Engineering Science neccessary to support other core modules. The module provides a comprehesive grounding in fundamental Engineering that is relevent to multiple Engineering courses in the department.

  • Introduction to Electronics 1

    Credits: 5

To introduce the learner to analogue and digital electronic circuits and devices.

  • Introduction to Energy Systems

    Credits: 10

This Module will introduce learners to basic energy concepts, energy use and impacts and give an overview of fossil fuel and renewable energy systems for each of the main energy uses.

  • Project 1
