Course Overview

Description
This module gives learners a detailed understanding of the design, operation and applications of Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal systems
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to:
1.Determine the Solar resource at any given site
2.Explain the construction, operation and installation of PV and Solar Thermal systems
3.Size and select the components and simulate the operation of grid connected photovoltaic systems
4.Design and simulate off-grid PV systems
5.Assess the viability of PV and Solar Thermal systems

More Information

  • Solar Resource: Review of basics of light energy. Dependence of irradiation on location, time and orientation. Measurement of irradiance. Solar resource databases.
Photovoltaic Cells & Modules: PV cell construction and operation. PV characteristics, curves and specifications. PV output calculation
Grid Connected PV; System Components and options, inverter types. Grid connection and Planning regulations. System Modelling and Economics
Off-Grid PV: sizing and selection of components: modules, batteries, charge controllers and inverters. Hybrid system design & modelling
Solar Thermal Systems: solar collector types. Domestic system options and components. Estimating output and system sizing. Large scale applications and requirements.
  • There are no formal entry requirements for participants wishing to take this module as a single subject, however these are not introductory level modules and some familiarity with the area as well as a level of independent study would be expected for success. Participants taking this module as part of the Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing Technology or the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Technology must meet the entry requirements outlined on the relevant course pages.

  • 12 Weeks – Blended Format of on campus and online.

    Tuesdays from 7pm to 10pm

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.  The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • 60% Continuous Assessment

    40% Project

  • €675

  • Applications will close Friday 4th December 2026 or once the maximum number of applicants is reached.

Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Programmes run subject to viable numbers.

  • Students enrolled on the Bachelor (Ordinary) programme who successfully accumulate 60 ECTS credits will be eligible for the award at a Level 7 Degree.

Individuals who register for standalone modules may, upon successful completion, apply for a TUS Single Subject Certificate (5 ECTS credits).
