Course Overview

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Advanced Pharmacy Technician Practice (Add-on) is Ireland’s first dedicated Level 8 Honours Degree qualification for pharmacy technicians. This innovative programme equips pharmacy technicians with specialist expertise in digital health, quality improvement, and sustainable healthcare – preparing them to take on expanded roles and lead in a modern pharmacy environment.

Graduate entry programmes – eligible to apply for pharmacy, medicine or physiotherapy graduate entry programmes among others.

Further postgraduate studies – graduates can progress to Level 9 (Masters) and Level 10 (PhD) study across a wide range of disciplines.

Pharmaceutical industry careers – supports entry into pharmaceutical industry roles and entry onto graduate development programmes.

This course will be delivered one day per week in person at our Athlone Campus over two years.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Technician (Level 7) at TUS or its equivalent at another university in Ireland.

Recognition of prior learning

Applicants who do not satisfy the standard entry requirements may be considered on a case-bycase basis through Recognition of Prior Learning. Applicants who hold a Higher Certificate in Pharmacy Technician (Level 6) in TUS or another Irish University, and 5 years post-qualification experience as a pharmacy technician in Ireland may apply for entry through recognition of prior learning.

International applicants

International applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*All applicants may be required to undertake an interview to satisfy entry criteria where places are oversubscribed or where applicants do not meet the standard entry requirements of the programme.

  • Digital Pharmacy

    Credits: 10

    Digital for Care — A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030 outlines a vision for a modern, patient-centred, and sustainable health and social system that leverages the latest digital and data technologies and solutions to enable the delivery of universal healthcare, improve the quality of care, promote health and wellbeing, enhance population health, expand capacity, increase efficiency, increase productivity and reduce costs. This module in digital pharmacy explores how pharmacy practice will change in order to achieve this vision and how pharmacy technicians can become leaders in this transition. The module investigates how information and communication technologies can be leveraged to enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of pharmacy services. Furthermore, the module empowers students to analyse the evolving landscape of digital healthcare and its application to contemporary pharmacy practice.

  • Healthcare Innovation and Quality Improvement

    Credits: 10

    This module is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to design and implement quality improvement and innovation initiatives along with exploring the challenges and opportunities for quality improvement and innovation in the contemporary pharmacy environment. Through a combination of theoretical and applied learning, the module will equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify areas for improvement in healthcare services, evaluate and implement healthcare innovation and quality improvement initiatives, and make data-driven and evidence-based decisions. The aim of the module is to prepare students to be leaders and decision-makers in the healthcare industry, who can contribute to a more innovative, sustainable, and effective healthcare system.

  • Pharmacy Management and Leadership

    Credits: 10

    This module provides learners with the knowledge and skills required to take on supervisory, managerial, and leadership roles within pharmacy settings. The module explores key concepts in pharmacy operations, team leadership, strategic planning, and the integration of technology, with a focus on practical application in both community and hospital pharmacy environments. Learners will develop the confidence to lead teams, manage resources effectively, and contribute to service improvement.

  • Sustainability in Pharmacy

    Credits: 10

    This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to deliver healthcare that is more environmentally sustainable and responsible. The module will focus on the impact of pharmacy practice on the environment, including the use of resources, waste management, and greenhouse gas emissions. Students will study the methods and tools for assessing the carbon and environmental footprint of healthcare and the strategies and approaches for promoting low-carbon and green pharmacy practices. The module will examine the implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives in pharmacy, with a focus on reducing the environmental footprint of pharmacy services. This module will prepare students to champion environmental considerations in the contemporary pharmacy setting.

  • Research Project 1

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to engage students in the creation of a formal pharmacy research project proposal. The focus of this module is to develop skills in critically reviewing research literature, project design, planning and management, and data collection methodology.

  • Research Project 2

    Credits: 15

    The aim of this module is to engage students in a formal pharmacy research project to develop skills in data collection, evaluation, and communication.
