Moyross Youth Academy Tesimonial

We here in Moyross Youth Academy (MYA) have seen directly the benefits of this programme. We operate in an area of disadvantage, an unemployment blackspot and all the negativity that co-exists with scoring very low on the social deprivation indices. Yet we have some fantastic young people who traditionally have been excluded from so many mainstream opportunities. Susan and Pat, through the programme, have made a hugely significant positive impact on all of the above with the introduction of this opportunity. Three cycles of sixteen young people a year is having an impact, evidenced by the over-subscription each intake. We have a huge need in the construction industry, an increasing youth unemployment rate and a demand for housing, infrastructure and other projects. There is untapped potential in areas such as Moyross across the city and county. TUS and Access to Apprenticeship made the significant decision to deliver part of the programme in our premises during the year. Such a positive message from a third level institution to come into our community and deliver. This should not be underestimated. I applaud the decision makers that made this happen.

We have seen local young girls excel and gain apprenticeships in what are traditionally male dominated areas of work. This is down to Access to Apprenticeship, challenging the status quo, providing opportunities and support to break the glass ceilings. The impact on individuals is huge, from a self esteem, personal development and life purpose point of view. This has knock on effects in their families and further into the communities where a virtuous circle is being formed.

I cannot speak highly enough of the programme whereby the only criticism is that we need more places and more opportunities if we are serious about breaking the cycle of disadvantage and produce productive citizens who have something to give to society and are seen as part of the solution and not the problem.

From a social justice viewpoint this is so necessary and welcome. It is encouraging to see the difference it is making to young peoples lives and futures. From an economical standpoint, these areas will see a reduction in state benefits, an increase in disposable income being reinvested back into the area.
