LSAD Research Institute – Designing Tomorrow’s University: Process, Practice and Funding Behind The Pluriversity

The Pluriversity is a speculative proposal for new Irish education infrastructure: a bioregionally-defined network of living systems labs, rooted in the Shannon region and oriented toward regeneration. It grew out of a three-year strategic design project that began with a simple question: what kind of institution does the world need the university to become?

In this talk, Studio Saol will trace how the work moved from a strategic commission for the University of Limerick, through a position paper, a strategic foresight report and a participatory Futures Café toolkit, to a speculative digital experience and a physical exhibition shown in design weeks at Copenhagen, Eindhoven and now Limerick. The session will focus on process: how design-led research, foresight methods and world-building were combined, and how artefacts and participation were used to make abstract strategy tangible.

It will also open up the practical side of the work, including how the project was funded and sustained across phases with the University of Limerick Foundation, Rethink Ireland and the DCCI, and what that means for postgraduate researchers developing practice-based projects of their own.

Adam Barry, Futures Director, Studio Saol
