PRISM Research Institute

Henrique-Da

Dr. Henrique Pereira is a Research Engineer at the Centre for Polymer Sustainability (CPS) at TUS, Athlone campus, leading microbiology and plant-level bioprocessing operations to replace fossil-based plastics with circular, bio-based packaging solutions. Holding a PhD in Polymer Engineering and an MSc in Biochemistry, he acts as the scientific coordinator and TUS representative for several European consortium projects, including SUSHI PACK, CircoVal, and Twinn4MicroUp. He actively collaborates with researchers and PhD students, while also supporting international academic mobility initiatives. With over a decade of experience, Henrique has considerable expertise in biochemistry, microbial cultivation—including yeast and bacterial processes—and the upcycling of plastic waste into biopolymers like bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). His experience also encompasses material characterisation, bioprocess modelling and optimisation, and (bio)polymers production protocols.
