Course Overview

The aim of this programme is to develop learners’ theoretical knowledge, applied understanding, and practical competencies in nutrition to support informed decision-making for health, wellbeing, and physical performance. The programme is grounded in evidence-based nutritional science and promotes critical engagement with contemporary research, enabling learners to apply sound nutritional principles in personal, professional, and fitness-related contexts. Through active online learning and applied assessment, participants will be supported in developing sustainable, health-focused practices and lifelong learning skills. Emphasis will be placed on consistent and accessible language across all promotional materials, highlighting the programmes’ relevance for individuals seeking to improve their own wellbeing, support others in non-specialist contexts, or engage in continuing professional development.

  • Foundations of Nutrition for Health and Fitness 

    This module provides the learner with the scientific principles and practical applications of human nutrition for general good health and optimising physical performance. The sources, functions and digestion of macro and micro nutrients, together with the concept of healthy eating, will be explored. This module also provides learners with an understanding of hydration and the non-nutrient components (including alcohol) of food and drink and will explore the measurement of nutritional requirements and energy balance.

  • Minimum Entry Requirements

    Mature applicants (i.e over 23 years)

    or

    Leaving Certificate Grade O6 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish)

    or

    QQI Level 5
    Full award with a minimum of eight modules.

  • This programme will be delivered online though our virtual learning environment.

  • Each 10-credit module normally equates to approximately 200 total learning hours. Total learning hours include the time spent in class, such as lectures, tutorials, and practical elements, as well as time spent working independently outside of college.

    The balance between these varies by discipline and level of study, and learners should be aware that workload will increase at particular times, especially when assignments are due.

  • The programme is assessed through a combination of continuous assessments & project work.
