Course Overview

The aim of this programme in Therapeutic and Play Skills is to develop advanced, practice-focused practitioners who can competently and ethically apply therapeutic and play-based approaches to support the emotional wellbeing, resilience, and mental health of children and young people. The Programme develops an individual’s skills in therapeutic and creative skills through the virtual learning environment and therefore, there is no direct contact with children as part of its delivery. Garda vetting is not a requesit.
The programme emphasises the integration of theory with professional practice, enabling learners to critically assess children’s needs, design and implement developmentally appropriate therapeutic play interventions, and evaluate their impact within real-world settings. Through reflective inquiry, and evidence-informed decision-making, learners will enhance their professional judgement, self-awareness, and capacity to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary contexts, while upholding safeguarding, ethical, and inclusive practice standards. Analysis of the theories of therapeutic play and child development is examined using a range of creative mediums such as paint, sand and clay, students explore through practical experiential learning, how they can support children’s wellbeing, nurture critical thinking and promote relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
