Course Overview

This programme seeks to provide leaners with an overview of Futures Thinking and Futures Studies in the context of sustainability and sustainability planning.

The key objectives of the module are to:

1) Critically explore and debate the notion of a singular defined future
2) Analysis possible, probably and preferrable futures in the context of sustainability and sustainability planning
3) Develop critical and anticipatory thinking competencies in learners
4) Interrogate traditional sustainability planning techniques by applying alternative futures thinking methodologies and tool

  • The programme will cover the following main areas:

    – Introduction to Futures Studies and Futures Thinking
    – Agenda 2030, SDGs and Futures
    – Temporal and inter-generational dimensions of sustainability.
    – Cultural and regional approaches to sustainability – Global North and Global South
    – Futures Thinking Approaches, methodologies and tools
    – Futures thinking for sustainability planning – case studies, examples and outcomes
    – Sustainability worldviews, sustainability leadership competencies and anticipatory competencies
    – Designing futures thinking interventions for sustainability planning

  • Participants will be required to have a Level 8 Degree in any discipline plus three years post qualification relevant work experience.

    Applicants with a Level 7 degree with significant post qualification relevant experience will be considered in line with the University’s RPL Policy.

    English Language: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements. Please note that we do not request proof of English language qualification or proficiency.

  • Modules are to be delivered over 15 weeks in an Online learning format as follows;

    The proposed delivery schedule is subject to change.

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.  The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • This course is funded by the Micro-credential Learner Fee Subsidy 2026 programme and fees are subsidised at 80% for all eligible learner categories.

    Full Fee is € 1,420
