Course Overview

The aim of the Energy Renovation for Traditional Buildings programme is to up-skill building professionals to develop knowledge and skills that allow them to design and deliver high quality, energy-efficient renovations to existing traditional buildings (pre 1940s). This will also place them in a position to contribute to meeting Ireland’s climate action and energy targets in relation to the green renovation of buildings.

This programme is developed through the DASBE project, funded by HCI Pillar 3 initiative in conjunction with the Heritage Council.

Applicants will require a minimum Level 7 award in relevant cognate areas.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements

Course Content

  • Fundamentals in Energy Renovation of Traditional Buildings

    This module is to provide the student with the relevant knowledge of the underpinning principles of building materials, environmental approaches, appropriate methodologies and solutions during the energy renovation of traditional buildings (pre 1940s).

  • Building Defects Detection and Analysis

    Students will gain practical experience in the use of digital tools for detecting and analysing defects in existing buildings prior to energy upgrades. Techniques for sensitive data gathering in accordance with best practice conservation principles will be applied. Students will be shown how the use of thermal imaging cameras, scanners and other tools can be used to capture building defects.

  • Modules are to be delivered over one year in an blended learning format.

    Semester 1: 4 hours contact and 8 hours independent learning per week. (5 ECTS)

    Semester 2: 4 hours contact and 8 hours independent learning per week.  (5 ECTS)

    Times:

    Wednesday/ Thursday evening online lectures 19.00-21.00hrs fortnightly

    Full day Face to face practical workshops and site visits on Fridays or Saturdays

     

    The proposed delivery schedule is subject to change.

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • Certificate in Energy Renovation for Traditional Buildings (Special Purpose Award, Level 8, 10 ECTS)

    There is an option to study  Module 1, Fundamentals in Energy Renovation of Traditional Buildings, as a single subject.  The award is a Certificate of Completion.

  • Fundamentals in energy Renovation for Traditional Buildings (Semester 1) – €625

    Energy Renovation for Traditional Buildings (Semester 1 & 2) – €1,250

     

  • Application Deadline:  Places are allocated on a first come first served basis, prioritizing unemployed and returning applicants. Course will be closed once the maximum number of applicants is reached. Courses run subject to viable numbers.
