Emma Cowley

Dr Emma Cowley is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the SHE Research Centre.

Emma holds a BSc from Dublin City University, an MSc from the University of Glasgow, and she completed her PhD at Liverpool John Moores University, where she developed HERizon, a remote exercise programme for teenage girls in Ireland and the UK. She has held postdoctoral research positions at DCU, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and TUS.

Emma is a mixed-methods researcher with a strong interest in improving the health and wellbeing of women and girls. She leads the Invisible Sportswomen international research collective, which highlights the experiences of women often overlooked in sport and exercise research. Her current work explores women’s experiences in the gym and with resistance training, and uses co-production and other participatory methods to address gender equity in sport. She is particularly interested in research that challenges structural barriers and supports more inclusive sport and exercise environments.
