Green Week 23rd-26th February

There will be a range of in-person and online events as well as competitions taking place for Green Week. Details of events can be found below with more to be announced in the coming days.

Online Events

Green Week will officially be launched by TUS President Vincent Cunnane. An outline of the week’s events will then be provided before a screening of Trocaire’s climate Justice Video Boiling Point. This will be followed by a talk and Q&A with Trocaire’s campaigns officer Emmet Sheerin. You can register by clicking HERE

This is a must-attend online event on 24th February from 2 to 4 pm, designed to bring together researchers, academics, and sustainability advocates from the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Midlands Midwest and the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) Ireland Chapter & Sustainability Group. This engaging webinar will explore cutting-edge sustainability research, funding opportunities, and the transformative power of interdisciplinary collaboration. Speakers include Dr. Ambarnil Ghosh, discussing Green Research Agenda 2030 & funding resources, Dr. Polat Goktas, who will share updates on MCAA’s sustainability initiatives, Tania Marsh discussing TUS-PURE research profiles and best practices and Kris A. Silveria SDRI presenting on his SDRI research portfolio, scale-up/demo facilities in Ireland & associated skills. You can register HERE.

Competitions

This competition is open to all TUS staff and students. You must design a poster which encourages staff and students to reduce their energy usage.  Top prize is €70 One4All voucher with other prizes including €50 voucher and TUS hoodie on offer. Top 5 TUS entries will be entered into SEAI’s nationwide poster competition.

Love photography? Love nature? This one’s for you! This is a biodiversity photo competition where the focus is the Shannon either, your TU or the river! We are looking for submissions of biodiversity photos from your TU Shannon campus OR in, on or around, the River Shannon (or River Suir), its lakes and tributaries. Upload your best Shannon Biodiversity pictures to be in with a chance of winning a €100 One4All Voucher, a TUS hoodie and other prizes!

Terms and conditions:
Entries must be submitted by 6pm on Wednesday 25th February.
Max 2 entries per person.
Do not include signatures on photos.
Photos must not have been entered into last year’s Nature Photography competition.

Athlone

Call down to reception and find out more about the work of Green Campus Athlone.

Come and see a range of student posters on sustainability topics. First and Second prizes to be won in Undergraduate and Postgraduate categories.

Meet at 12.30 in the main reception. Gloves/litter pickers provided.

Come along to the earl of Ross theatre to watch this documentary about the wonder of nature and it’s powers of recovery. Refreshments will be provided

Shannen Healy aka Green Gal, known for her accessible content on all thnigs sustainability will be giving a talk entitled ‘How to embed sustainability into our lives’. This will be followed by a Q&A.

Limerick Events

This workshop will support participants in understanding how to embed ESD within the curriculum, with a particular focus on curriculum design.

The recently published Compendium of Embedding Education for Sustainable Development in Teaching, Learning and Assessment (Ireland’s first ESD compendium in a Higher Education Institution) will form a key part of the discussion. Attendees will engage in practical discussion and reflection, and will be encouraged to identify concrete actions they can implement following the workshop to enhance their own teaching practice.

Join the TUS Limerick Green Campus Committee for a walk from the Clare St to Moylish Campus. The walk is approx 3 km and will take approx 40 minutes.

Join the College Green Team for a relaxed walk from Moylish campus to nearby Coonagh campus 🌱

Along the way, we’ll chat about urban biodiversity, how traffic jams impact our environment, and simple ways greener travel can make a real difference. It’s a chance to stretch your legs, meet like-minded people, and rethink everyday journeys and parking woes—one step at a time. The walk is approx. 3 km and will take approx. 40 minutes. Walkers will return on the bus at 2.20 and lunch will be provided on return to Moylish. Come walk, talk, and go green with us! 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🌍

Thurles

Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage with special responsibility for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’ Sullivan will give a talk about the work his department is doing in relation to Biodiversity nationally.

Introduced by TUS President Prof. Vincent Cunnane.

This session will feature talks from two local, sustainable businesses.

Shirley McLoughney, Artist and Owner of Petals and Paper Shirley will discuss her sustainable art business that combines used coffee cups with pressed flowers to create bespoke art pieces, greeting cards and jewellery. For more information on Shirley and her business see the Farmers Jornal feature at Petals and Paper: artist turns trash to treasure – Free   Shirley will also host a Craft Stall providing the opportunity to view and buy her work.

Mary Fogarty, Manager, The Cottage Loughmore
 Mary will recount the story of The Cottage, a community co-operative that runs a thriving shop and tearooms in the village of Loughmore. Established in response to the closure of the local shop and post office, The Cottage has been widely recognised for its strong social impact and valued community service. Nationally, it was named Irish Times Best Café/Tearooms 2014, and more recently received the Tipperary Chamber Award for Hospitality and Tourism.

Green Week consisted of a range of talks, events and competitions taking place across TUS campuses and online. Details can be found below.

Online Events

Green Week will officially be launched by TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane at this webinar. This will be followed by a guest lecture from environmental journalist John Gibbons entitled “The Everything Emergency”.  This event is open to all TUS staff and students. Climate Fresk is an interactive and collaborative workshop on climate change. It helps participants understand the causes and effects of climate change and empowers them to take high-impact climate action. Training will be delivered by Sara Carroll from Waggle learning. The workshop is free for TUS staff and students. Places are limited. You can sign up HERE

Athlone Green Campus are wrapping up their Green Week with their 3rd Annual Green Week Symposium. With a range of sustainability experts from within and outside TUS, this event will have something for everyone. Speakers on the day include Irish environmentalist Duncan Stewart, Charlene Hurley from Cycle Up,  Zimbabwean climate activist Nomalanga Dube, Dr Noëlle O’Connor, Sean Connell, Nicola Ryan, Dr. Anne Marie O’Brien, Clara Keevey & Dr Mercedes Alonso-Gomez.

This exhibition will run from Monday until Thursday and feature posters of student sustainable education and research initiatives including work with Proudly Made in Africa, Stand and Vertical Tower Garden projects.

Call down to the SU on Tuesday morning for a medley of sustainable activities. It kicks off with an Insect Hotel Making Workshop, and a Clothes Repair workshop by Zipyard, both at 10am followed by FREE refreshments at 11. BSc Pharmacy Technician students and Darina Harte and Catherine Carragher of HSE Health Promotion Team will hold an event to encourage staff and students to stop smoking & vaping. Prizes to be won!!

Kevin Ward leads a ‘walk and talk’ of the HTL garden and shares tips on how to start your own home garden.

Coonagh

Guest lecture for the Year 2 BSc in Applied Psychology module – Loss and Grief in Psychology but open to all interested staff and students.  Joanne Begley, social care worker, author and death doula will discuss her experiences in supporting people at the end of life.  The role of a doula, which is relatively new in Ireland, is linked to UN SDG 3 (health and wellbeing for all, at every stage of life).

Panda Waste will be on campus promoting being greener , cleaner and explaining how to be more sustainable.

The Road Safety Authority will be on campus giving information on bike, pedestrian and scooter safety.

Thurles

There will be a range of events on the Thurles campus on Tuesday 4th March.
