Sarah- Microbiology Graduate

Name: Sarah

Course: BSc (Hons) Microbiology

I’m Sarah and I have completed the 4-year BSc (Hons) Microbiology course here in the TUS Athlone campus in 2024.

The Microbiology degree offered in TUS has provided me with invaluable skills, experience and knowledge. It is a comprehensive course designed to allow students to experience the industrial and research applications of this degree post-graduation. It encompasses modules based on food, environmental and industrial microbiology whilst also featuring modules on virology, genetics, biochemistry and more. This provides a broad range of learning paired with modules to support transferable skills such as communication, analytical and critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The course work is complimented with lab work that is both interesting and fun. The lab skills learned are vital to prepare students for their final year project but also to ensure competency as a scientist after completing this degree.

Another fantastic opportunity provided through this course is the industry experience gained when on work placement in pharmaceutical companies. This is an important feature that will stand to students, post-graduation. Work placement was one of the highlights of the course for me as it allows students to understand the immense opportunities available with this degree, as well as gain experience in the industrial field and network with various people and companies.

In TUS, there is a friendly environment with many supports available to students and excellent facilities provided. The lecturers, extended faculty and staff are all a great help to the students. There are plenty of college initiatives and societies to get involved in to also enhance the student experience and meet new people.

I have created so many new memories and friends through this course. I gained invaluable experiences in classes, labs and from work placement, and I would highly recommend this course to people with an interest in science.
