Department of Social Sciences

20191004_214008[1] (2)_Anna Rose Codd

Anna Rose Codd is the Programme Director of the Early Childhood Education and Care degree programmes in TUS, Athlone. She has extensive experience as an early childhood provider, setting up her preschool in 1995. Over a period of 20 years, Anna Rose developed quality preschool provision, where the affordances of the natural outdoor and indoor environments supported children’s holistic learning. Her learning pathway included undertaking courses in Montessori and HighScope pedagogical approaches to inform her practice and, later, to best support students’ reflective and reflexive professional practice.

Anna Rose’s lecturing role and practice experience have been enhanced by European study visits, as well as observing pedagogical practice in China. Conference attendance and presentations provides opportunities to review and compare cross cultural practices. She is currently undertaking an ethnographic research project as part of a PhD study, examining the outdoors as a pedagogical space in early childhood. Drawing on theoretical concepts of affordance theory and relational pedagogy, her research, with children, parents and educators, explores how values and experiences shape pedagogy in the outdoors.
