TUS Seminar to Demystify Menopause and Raise Awareness of Women’s Health Supports

Recent research by the SHE Research Group at TUS has shown that the majority of Irish women feel unprepared and lack knowledge going into the menopause.

Keen to initiate conversation on this topic, TUS will host a seminar “Let’s Talk Menopause and Health at Work” on its Athlone campus on Friday, October 14.

The event, organised by TUS EDI Office in collaboration with SHE, and with support from Sport Ireland, aims to engage with staff and the public to raise awareness about menopause, with a focus on menopause in the workplace.

“October is World Menopause Month and offers an ideal opportunity to raise menopause awareness and start conversations on how best to support staff in the workplace” explained TUS’s EDI manager Dr Carol Wrenn.

“Menopause is a unique experience for each woman. For many, it can be difficult talking about it, particularly in the workplace. Through this event, we are hoping to tackle the taboos and discuss this important topic openly and ensure those who are menopausal get the support they need,” she said.

Experts drawn from fields such as nutrition, physiology, psychology will be in attendance to discuss the topic and answer questions, with the aim of breaking down the misconceptions around menopause and sharing best practice.

Dr Deirdre Forde, who works in menopause care and treatment, and Dr Claire Hardy, a chartered psychologist from Lancaster University and one of the world’s foremost menopause experts, will be among those speaking at the event.

TUS’s own SHE group will also share insights on their most recent menopause research, which will be led by nutrition and health scientist Dr Trish Heavey.

“This is about making menopause part of our everyday conversation and ensuring women who encounter challenges at this time have the information they need around nutrition, physical activity and other lifestyle interventions in order to maintain optimal health and wellbeing as they age” said Dr Heavey.

This event is open to the public and free to attend. Register here.
