Name: Aaron Browne
Course: BSc (Hons) Forensic & Pharmaceutical Science
Year Graduated: 2021
Brief description of your job: I am currently working in Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) as a Forensic Laboratory Analyst in the Chemistry Section. In Chemistry, we analyse several different types of evidence from criminal cases including Fire Debris from Arson Cases, Explosives, Gunshot Residue, Pepper Sprays, Glass and Paint, Chemical Unknowns and Tachographs.
Why did you choose your course?
I really enjoyed studying science subjects in school and was interested Forensic Science but was unsure which course was best for me since I was indecisive about which field I wished to pursue. I chose this course since it covered a large range of scientific modules that are applicable to different scientific fields that I could pursue.
What did you most like about your course?
I believe one of the courses biggest strengths is its emphasis on practical work in the lab as well as lectures. I was also impressed at how easily accessible my lecturers were if I ever needed help.
How has your degree helped you in your career?
I have found the chemistry skills I’ve learned to be widely applicable in my role in FSI, especially since the lab practicals covered throughout the course include the same analysis we work on in FSI. The skills I’ve learned on my six month work placement as an analyst in The State Laboratory have also been extremely valuable to my role in FSI.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I would like to encourage any prospective or current students studying the course to pursue an exciting and rewarding career in Forensic Science as FSI will be actively recruiting new Laboratory Analysts and Forensic Scientists in the future.
