Grace Lawler – Bioveterinary Science Graduate

Name: Grace Lawler

Course: BSc (Hons) Bioveterinary Science

Year Graduated: 2022

My name is Grace Lawler, and I am from Carlow. From 2016 to 2020, I pursued a Bachelor of Science Honours in Bioveterinary Science (course code US867) at Technological University of the Shannon.

This degree is an interdisciplinary program encompassing a wide range of subjects, including life sciences, biological sciences, and animal sciences. The course has a significant practical component, with extensive hands-on lab work, which was my favourite part. Additionally, students have opportunities for educational field trips and site visits, which open doors for future work placements. With placement now mandatory, students are well-prepared for their final year and gain valuable experience for future careers.

The university offers excellent academic facilities and support, with manageable student numbers in lectures and labs, creating an environment where students feel comfortable seeking assistance. This course prepares graduates for various employment opportunities in the agricultural and animal pharmaceutical sectors, and it also sets a strong foundation for postgraduate research.

I have continued my academic journey by enrolling in a research PhD program at TUS, an opportunity made possible by the skills and experiences I gained during my undergraduate studies. Now, I independently work in the Bioscience Research Institute lab, I travel to international conferences, presenting my research, networking, and exploring potential career paths and I also plan to publish part of my research, which will enhance my profile both nationally and internationally. All of this is thanks to the Bioveterinary Science course.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying in Athlone. The course is top-class, taught by outstanding lecturers who are always available to support students. As a student-athlete on scholarship, I captained the college team and represented at national competitions and even the International Grand Prix in 2017 and 2018. The sports facilities are world-class, and the college offers numerous clubs and societies where students can pursue their hobbies, interests and talents at any level and express themselves. Athlone has been a home away from home, providing an amazing college experience and I would highly recommend this course to anyone considering it.
