Name: Cian Tiernan
Course: BSc (Hons) Microbiology
My name is Cian Tiernan, I recently graduated from the BSc (Honours) course in Microbiology at TUS Athlone in 2023. Currently I’m completing my Masters in Bio-processing engineering in Hochschule Emden/Leer, Germany.
My experience in college in Athlone will forever be cherished. When understanding why TUS stands out from other colleges, it’s definitely the professors. Every professor was always fair and pushed you, but also very modern and diverse in making you reach your potential, teaching you the theory and skills needed in industry and life. What stands out most to me is the work placement in year 3, which I did in Germany in the Hochshule Emden/Leer. During this time, I worked on adapting mammalian cells to grow in a suspension and serum free medium. All of which was extremely interesting and unique when compared to microbial cultures which you will learn in class! My time in Germany was phenomenal and has genuinely changed who I am.
The influence from the professors, the knowledge gained, the soft and hard skills learned, and my time in Germany could never be accurately described in such a small paragraph. What I have learned in my Bachelor’s degree has given me many advantages and tools which I utilize regularly now in my master’s degree. The microbiology degree not only teaches you how to become a successful microbiologist but a successful scientist who is able to transfer the skills and knowledge into many different fields.
I highly recommend choosing this course and encourage all future students to part take in the work placement abroad, which was extremely beneficial in increasing future career prospects.
