Green Week 2025 3rd – 6th March

There will be a range of in-person and online events and competitions taking place for Green Week. Details of events can be found below with more to be announced in the coming days.

Online Events

Green Week will officially be launched by TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane at this webinar. This will be followed by a guest lecture from environmental journalist John Gibbons entitled “The Everything Emergency”.  This event is open to all TUS staff and students. Dr Noelle O’ Connor will facilitate this webinar highlighting best practice examples of Education For Sustainable Development (ESD)  in TUS.

Athlone Green Campus are wrapping up their Green Week with their 3rd Annual Green Week Symposium. With a range of sustainability experts from within and outside TUS, this event will have something for everyone. Speakers on the day include legendary Irish environmentalist and architect Duncan Stewart and, Charlene Hurley from Cycle Up and Zimbabwean climate activist Nomalanga Dube.  (registration coming soon)

Competitions

Put your photo skills to the test this Green Week to be in with a chance of winning some great prizes including €100 One4All Voucher and a TUS Hoodie!
To win you need to take a selfie at 6 sustainable locations on your campus and submit them before the end of the week. For more information on how to enter, select your campus here:

This is a  photo competition open to TUS students and staff to showcase the beauty of nature. All the sustainability work we do is to protect our beautiful environment and that’s what this competition aims to celebrate. Upload your best pictures of Irish nature to be in with a chance of winning a €100 One4All Voucher, a TUS hoodie and other prizes!

Athlone

Call down to reception and find out more about the work of Green Campus Athlone and while you’re there, play our Carbon Footprint Game to be in with a chance of winning some TUS merch!

This exhibition will run from Monday until Thursday and feature posters of student sustainable education and research initiatives including work with Proudly Made in Africa, Stand and Vertical Tower Garden projects.

Meet at 12 in the main reception. Gloves/litter pickers provided.

Open to all staff and students. Call down to the SU to make an insect hotel to do your bit for biodiversity.

Call down to the SU on Tuesday morning for a medley of sustainable activities. It kicks off with a Clothes Repair workshop by Zipyard at 10 followed by FREE refreshments at 11. Thesis in 3 showcasing some amazing sustainable research takes place at 11.15. finally there’s a student debate kicking off at 12.

BSc Pharmacy Technician students and Darina Harte and Catherine Carragher of HSE Health Promotion Team will hold an event to encourage staff and students to stop smoking & vaping. Prizes to be won!!

Kevin Ward leads a ‘walk and talk’ of the HTL garden and shares tips on how to start your own home garden.

Coonagh

Guest lecture for the Year 2 BSc in Applied Psychology module – Loss and Grief in Psychology but open to all interested staff and students.  Joanne Begley, social care worker, author and death doula will discuss her experiences in supporting people at the end of life.  The role of a doula, which is relatively new in Ireland, is linked to UN SDG 3 (health and wellbeing for all, at every stage of life).

Increase your Climate Justice knowledge with a game of Snakes and Ladders brought to you by GOAL.

Panda Waste will be on campus promoting being greener , cleaner and explaining how to be more sustainable.

The Road Safety Authority will be on campus giving information on bike, pedestrian and scooter safety.

Thurles

There will be a range of events on the Thurles campus on Tuesday 4th March.
Bring unwanted clothes or books (must be in good condition) to the swap shop and pick up something new!

The focus of this webinar is to build awareness and understanding of climate change and what it means for our country and for TUS, to help staff understand their role both professionally and personally; and what action can be taken by TUS.
