Dr Owen Ross is Head of Transitions and Student Success at the Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest, in Ireland.
His previous academic roles include Head of Department of Business & Management and Head of Department of Humanities at the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland. He has lectured in the discipline areas of management, leadership and communications.
His research interests are in first-year student retention, student engagement and completion. He completed his PhD in 2023, which focused on evaluating a Student Success Model he developed during his time as Head of Department of Business & Management at the Athlone Institute of Technology. The model comprised three foundation blocks, six student success pillars and twenty-seven actions or interventions. His research found that implementing the model led to a substantial gain in student retention, with the departmental non-progression rate reducing from 36% to 12% over eight academic years.
