Dr. Chris McDermott is a lecturer in Law in the Department of Social Studies. He teaches in the areas of human rights law, child law and family law. Chris graduated with a BCL (Hons) degree in Law from NUI Galway in 2003 and with an LL.M in Public International Law from the University of Edinburgh in 2004. He completed a Ph.D in International Human Rights Law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUI Galway in 2009. He is a qualified Attorney-at-Law (New York) and holds an Advanced Diploma in Immigration and Asylum Law from the Honorable Society of the King’s Inns. He specialises in the area of asylum and refugee law. He is a founding member of New Horizon, a charity established to support asylum seekers and refugees living in the midlands, and he currently serves as its secretary. He has previously served on the Board of the Irish Refugee Council, and more recently worked on the Council’s Afghan Admission Programme. Chris welcomes applications for postgraduate study in the area of asylum and refugee law.
