Dr Anne M. Friel holds a PhD from the School of Medicine, National University of Ireland, Galway and a BSc (Hon) in Analytical Science from Dublin City University, in addition to a BSc (Hon) in Applied Biopharmaceutical and Healthcare Sciences from GMIT and a PGDip in Learning, Teaching and Assessment from Athlone Institute of Technology.
Prior to joining TUS in 2011, Anne worked for over a decade in the areas of reproductive biology, cancer genetics, cancer stem cells and novel biologics at the NCBES, Harvard University, Trinity College Dublin and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Anne lectures across a number of programmes. Her research interests include: translational medicine, therapeutic oncology, novel biologic testing, tumour development and cancer stem cells, and has supervised students undertaking research to the awards of BSc, MSc and PhD. She has previously served as external examiner for Dundalk Institute of Technology. Anne has >80 research publications. She is an ad hoc reviewer for international scientific journals and research organisations.
Anne is the Editor-in-Chief of the SURE Journal (Journal of the SURE Network – Ireland’s only publication dedicated to undergraduate STEM research), which was awarded the Career Impact Strategy Award at the Education Awards in 2023.
