Dr. Andy Fogarty received his BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from University College Galway, his MSc in Environmental Microbiology from The Ohio State University, USA and his PhD in Ecotoxicology and Microbiology from University College Galway. Andy lectures in Microbiology, Environmental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology in The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS Midlands). He currently teaches Ecotoxicology and Environmental Toxicology at several International Universities including Aalborg University, Denmark, University College Dublin, and The University of Applied Sciences, Emden/Leer, Germany where he was appointed Adjunct Professor in 2010. He was appointed to the HETAC Register of Expert Panelists in October 2009 (now QQI) and currently serves as external examiner to Dublin City University. Andy has previously served as external examiner in Dublin Institute of Technology, IT Carlow, IT Sligo and IT Tralee. Andy was appointed in May 2014 as an external reviewers of funded research by the Czechia Science Foundation. In November 2014, he was appointed as a Microbiology and Toxicology technical advisor to The Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) for laboratories seeking accreditation under the International Standards Organisation requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories (ISO 17025). As part of this role, witnessed activity assessments are carried out in the public and commercial laboratories seeking to achieve or retain INAB accreditation.

Andy has successfully supervised nine Ph.D. and numerous M.Sc students. He is currently co-supervising four PhD students. His research work primarily focuses on (i) Multi-trophic ecotoxicity assessment of xenobiotics (ii) Histopathological analyses of the effects of EDCs in fish (iii) Ecotoxicological assessment of novel wastewater treatment techniques (iv) Microbial investigations and development of in vitro urinary tract models and (v) The use of microorganisms to produce sustainable plastics.

He has contributed 140 research publications and communications. He also has contributed to several TV and radio documentaries on environmental issues.

He has delivered over 60 industrial training courses in Environmental Compliance and Due Diligence and has provided professional consultancy for the past 25 years in the areas of public health Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology and Ecotoxicology.
