The three year (Level 7) Bachelor of Business programme in Accounting & Finance will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a successful career in Accounting & Finance and leads on to the Level 8 (Honours) Degree programme in Accounting & Finance, through the ladder system.

Tatiana’s application was successful and her insights below show how RPL has helped her on her academic journey.

Tell us your Recognition of Prior Learning story?

“On moving to Ireland with my family to start a new life I realised that my English language skills were not sufficient to gain employment in the area of my expertise. I studied English and signed up for a FETAC Level 5 business programme in Central College Limerick. I intended to continue on to the accounting technician programme in LCFE, but unfortunately, in 2020, the numbers were insufficient to run that programme.

I decided to apply to LIT (now TUS) for the Level 6 Certificate in Accounting and Finance, as a direct entry student. I found the application process difficult and as a result started the course in October of that year. I was behind with my studies from the start, it was during the pandemic and all classes were online and to add to that, I had a three year old child to take care of. I felt that I could not catch up and so I quit the programme.

During that year I upskilled in MS Excel and again applied for the accounting technician programme the following year. Once again, that programme did not run.

In 2022, I applied again for Accounting and Finance in TUS. I was greatly surprised and happy to be accepted as an advanced entry student to year two of the programme using RPL.

Recognition of Prior Learning gave me courage, hope, and a lot of confidence that I can continue on my journey of working in accounting and finance in the future. Although I consider myself an ambitious person, this RPL opportunity has doubled my courage and ambition to continue pursuing my dream.

I had extraordinary teachers who recognised my potential and at the same time encouraged and guided me whenever I needed it, for which I am very grateful.

Throughout my professional training journey, I want to encourage other people in situations like mine, as adults, to be brave and ambitious in pursuing their dreams, to face all obstacles, and to never give up.”

Why was RPL the right fit for you?

“RPL provided the opportunity to have my prior learning and experience recognised, facilitating my transition to a new country and career path. It allowed me to pursue higher education while acknowledging my existing skills, bridging the gap, and enabling me to progress.”

How has RPL and higher education impacted you?

“RPL and higher education have changed my life. It has made me feel more confident and has opened new job opportunities in accounting and finance for me. Going through the process confirmed that I have the skills needed to succeed, and it helped me grow personally and professionally in a new setting.”

How would you describe your experience of the RPL application process?

“The RPL application process recognised my efforts, my skills and my knowledge. While it had its challenges (such as finding available courses) it opened doors for my academic progress. It showed my commitment to success, even when things were uncertain, strengthening my determination.”

What advice would you offer someone looking into RPL in higher education?

“If you’re thinking about RPL in higher education, my advice is to gather proof of your past learning and experiences. Look into the process and requirements of the institution you’re interested in and ask for help if needed. Be confident and persistent – it’s a chance to have your skills recognised and to move forward.”
