Lesley O’Donoghue

Bachelor of Science in Quality

The TUS B.Sc. in Quality is offered by the TUS Flexible Learning Department as an RPL route to a full Level 7 degree through Springboard. Learners must complete three separate Level 7 certificates, each equal to 20 ECTS credits. Successful learners can then use these Special Purpose Awards as RPL for a full Level 7 award. Terms and conditions for Springboard programmes apply.

Lesley was already working when she embarked on her RPL journey. Lesley recounts her RPL experience below.

How did you use RPL?

I used RPL to gain a full academic award in TUS.

Tell us your RPL story

I was working full time, but I didn’t hold a degree. I only had a diploma, and it was always my intention to go back to third level to receive a degree. I came across RPL when I was looking to do a course in LIT / TUS. A lecturer in TUS was very helpful explaining what my options were with RPL and future learning.

Why was RPL the right fit for you?

RPL was the right fit for me because I found it difficult to register for a course, in the area of work that I am in, that would allow me to get a degree award and continue working.

How has RPL and higher education impacted you on a personal level?

I’ve worked in industry all my life and held roles in Quality and Regulatory Affairs. As a hard worker I deserved these roles but always felt not having a degree was a negative. Being able to use RPL and register for a course that allowed me to receive a degree has really helped my confidence.

How has RPL impacted you professionally?

It has been recognized by my manager that I have worked on my own development. This is recognized in turn in my annual review. Management see this as a huge positive since the course relates to my work.

How would you describe your experience of the RPL process in TUS?

I would describe it as a positive experience. Painless and straightforward.

What advice would you offer someone looking into RPL in higher education?

Go for it. You won’t regret it.
