Nurturing the Bright Minds of the Future

TUS Awards 15 Research Internships to Undergraduate Students

The Technological University of the Shannon has awarded 15 research internships to full and part time undergraduate students, as part of the TUS RISE programme.

The six week internships will provide students with the opportunity to work with leading researchers and enterprise in high-quality environments to gain research experience at an early stage in their career. The scheme aims to nurture current students’ talent and interest, gaining practical research experience and an understanding of research processes, techniques, and methodologies by conducting a research project.

Assistant Lecturer & Supervisor  Jennifer Moran Stritch, said “We are thrilled 1st  year student, Niamh McGrath, was awarded an inaugural TUS RISE summer research internships.  Research skills form a fundamental part of the BSc in Applied Psychology programme, so Niamh will be getting a solid grounding in the essential techniques needed to successfully complete her undergraduate degree at TUS. The TUS RISE summer research internships are an excellent opportunity for undergrad students to hone their emerging skills in projects that really interest them. As members of the Social Sciences ConneXions research institute, both Dr. Houghton and I are delighted to have Niamh on board with us this summer, exploring college students’ awareness of the links between alcohol use and certain types of cancer, huge thanks to the RDI team for spearheading the initiative.”

Working closely with their supervisors, students will uniquely experience the lifecycle of a researcher, from grant application, applied research and the reporting process. The ethos of the internship scheme is to foster an interest in research and to nurture the TUS undergraduate community.  Providing student-centred higher education that is research-informed, regionally-relevant and accessible to all.

TUS RISE is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27.
