Research Week Success for TUS RISE Student

TUS RISE is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27.

Congratulations to TUS RISE Student, Mariana Juca da Silveira e Silva who received the Best Overall Impact & Best Communications awards during the TUS Research Week Postgraduate Research Impact Showcase.

This research, supervised by Dr. Emma Murphy and sponsored by the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR), focuses on the potential of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells as a novel strategy to combat antimicrobial resistance, particularly in the context of sepsis. The study integrates an organ-on-chip approach as an alternative to traditional human or animal models, providing a more physiologically relevant platform for evaluating AMP efficacy. The findings of this research have the potential to impact the development of advanced therapeutic strategies for combating multidrug-resistant infections.

Supervised by Dr Emma Murphy (TUS), Prof Emanuele Rezoagli (UNIMIB), Prof John Laffey (University of Galway), Dr Gustavo Fehrenbach (TUS) and Dr Patrick Murray (TUS).

Currently, Mariana is a PhD researcher in the Bioengineering Research Group (Organ-on-Chip) and the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR) Technology Gateway.
