The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has launched a pilot programme to help adults with intellectual disabilities gain the skills and confidence to participate in Higher Education.
The ‘Certificate in Applied Learning and Skills Development’ (CALSD) is a Level 6 qualification, funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) under PATH 4 (Programme for Access to Higher Education). The full-time programme is specifically designed with a focus on inclusivity, personal development and preparation for the employment and professional life.
Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology/ Director Progression Pathways at (TUS) Technological University of the Shannon, Dr. Maura Clancy said: “We are extremely proud to launch our Certificate in Applied Learning and Skills Development which will be available at both our Moylish and Athlone campuses. Student will gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate fully in higher education along with work-related competencies to facilitate meaningful employment.
Dean of Faculty of Science and Healthcare, Dr. Don Faller explains: “Teaching will occur in small groups with a high level of individual support, if required and will focus on active student engagement, adaptive assessments and digital literacy. There will be opportunities for students to experience mainstream classes in semester one, with progressive inclusion following in semester two.”
CALSD will run from mid-March 2025 until September 2026 and will be available on both TUS Athlone and Limerick campuses. The four-semester certificate comprises of both compulsory and elective modules with supported work placement taking place in its final semester.
Modules include Skills for Higher Education, Wellbeing and Advocacy in Higher Education and Society, Placement Preparation and Professional Reflection for Placement whilst electives include Introduction to Culinary Arts, Sport and Coaching Skills and Creative and Recreational Studies.
To celebrate the launch, an open evening will take place on Wednesday 12th Feb at TUS Athlone Campus from 6 until 8pm and Thursday 13th February at TUS Moylish Campus, Limerick.
