A risk assessment looks at the potential hazards that can cause harm to people. It identifies, whether measures are adequate, or additional measures are required, to prevent injury and ill health.
Some risk assessments may be simple, for example, assessing cleaning up spills on restaurant floors which can create a slip hazard. Other risk assessments will be more complex, for example, the risks associated with handling and mixing chemicals.
To assist with supporting the risk assessment process in TUS, a Generic Risk Assessment Guidance Document has been prepared to support managers and staff of Faculties, Departments, Research Institutes, & Campus Companies, understanding and undertaking Risk Assessments covering the more generic work activities.
While the Risk Levels and limits used in this guidance are common across all TUS activities. The example given in the guidance is intended to support the more generic work activities which can be exposed to the following potential hazards : slips, trips, falls, fire, noise, vibration, manual handling activities, and tours.
On the other hand, some potential hazards, e.g. Chemical hazards or Biological Hazards may require a more extensive RA process and, in these instances, a chemical or biological risk assessment template should be used.
