When I first went through the gates of TUS, I took with me more than just a bag full of necessities; I brought dreams from a small town called Badlapur in Maharashtra, India, a profound interest in science, and a drive to explore the world beyond its limits.

Today, as a postgraduate student in the MSc Pharmaceutical and Chemical Analysis program at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), I can state that choosing TUS was a watershed moment in my scientific career and foreign experience.

A Journey Beyond Geography

Coming from Badlapur, a town rich in heart and culture but far from global research centers, I’ve always wanted to make an impact through science. My undergraduate studies in pharmacy provided a good foundation, but I was eager for more research, hands-on experience with advanced analytical techniques, and international exposure.

Ireland, with its welcoming academic environment and thriving pharmaceutical industry, became my ideal location. When I discovered the MSc program at TUS, I knew I’d found the right university – one that provides academic brilliance as well as chances that extend far beyond the classroom.

Why TUS? A Platform for Purpose

Coming from a strong academic background in Pharmacy (B.Pharm), I was eager to explore a postgraduate course that balanced practical skills with research depth. TUS provided just that: a vibrant curriculum based on analytical chemistry, instrumentation, and pharmaceutical development, supported by cutting-edge labs and a student-centered environment.

From the first day, I felt like I wasn’t just learning about science, but how to do science.  Whether it was learning new advanced analytical methods such as FTIR, TGA, DSC, and DMA, or participating in collaborative lab work, each encounter was a step forward in my development.

The lecturers at TUS taught us theory while also encouraging us to think critically, ask questions, and accept failure as a necessary part of growth.  Their mentoring shaped my confidence and fueled my passion for analytical study.

Taking My Research Global: Academic Research Project at NHL Stenden, Netherlands

My overseas research project at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in Emmen, Netherlands, stands out as one of my favorite TUS experiences. During my two months abroad as part of my academic program, I not only conducted research but also learned about different cultures, made connections with people from around the world, and represented TUS internationally.

This wasn’t just a trip – it was a turning point.

I had the chance to interact with academics and colleagues from a variety of intellectual and cultural backgrounds, which helped me advance both professionally and personally. I gained confidence, made new friends, and gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be a global citizen in science after venturing much beyond my comfort zone.

But this journey didn’t begin without a few doubts.

When I was first offered this opportunity, I was filled with excitement, but also anxiety. Coming from a middle-class family, I knew what it had already taken to come to Ireland for my master’s degree. The idea of moving to another country again, even temporarily, brought up real financial concerns. As much as I wanted to say yes, part of me wondered if it would even be possible.

That’s where the support from TUS, especially Prof. Brian and the TUS International Office, changed everything. Not only did they guide me through the entire process with patience and encouragement, but they also helped me secure Erasmus+ funding, which turned this opportunity from a dream into reality. I could focus on learning, exploring, and making the most of every moment, without financial stress holding me back.

Life in Ireland: A New Home, A New Me

Living in Ireland has been one of the most transformative parts of my journey. The town of Athlone, home to TUS, has offered me more than just a place to study – it has become a home away from home. It is peaceful, warm, and full of hidden moments of joy, learning, and connection. Here, I’ve had the opportunity to celebrate festivals from around the world, which helped me stay close to my roots while embracing new cultures. I celebrated Holi, Diwali, and Chinese New Year with fellow Indian and international students from dozens of countries as we shared stories, food, and traditions. These moments helped me realize that while I came to Ireland for academics, I gained so much more in terms of cultural richness and global friendships.

But moving to another country, with a different climate, education system, and lifestyle, isn’t always easy. Sometimes I felt uncertain or overwhelmed, but TUS never let me feel alone.

I am especially grateful to Eoin, Greg, and the team of TUS International Office, who have been pillars of support throughout my journey. Whether it was answering my emails with warmth, helping with updates on our progress, connecting us through webinars and seminars, or simply checking in to make sure I was settling in well, they were always there, and I truly appreciate their constant guidance.

Final Words to Future Students

If you’re reading this and wondering whether a student from a small town can find their place in the global world of science, let me assure you: you absolutely can.

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) doesn’t just offer education, it opens doors. It empowers you with the skills, confidence, and global perspective to step into labs, research centers, and opportunities you may have only dreamed of.

TUS gave me more than a degree – it gave me the belief that no dream is too distant. From the stillness of Badlapur to the bright labs of Europe, it was through TUS that I didn’t just cross countries – I crossed into a stronger, more fearless version of myself.

So, if you’re ready to explore, to learn, and to transform – your journey can start here, too.
