How to deal with Homesickness 🙁

R Picture1

Hii there, I’m Ranee, and I’m currently a second-year student at TUS pursuing my undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance. Back home, studying overseas was always something I dreamed about. My friends were so excited for me, they envied the idea of me living on my own and having all this freedom. But I never realized just how tough homesickness would hit me.

Even though I’ve made new friends here, nothing quite compares to the friendships and connections I had back home. I’ve had moments where I’ve completely broken down, but I always kept it to myself, especially from my family. Over time, I’ve come to realize that keeping everything bottled up isn’t healthy. It only makes things harder because all those feelings build up until you feel completely overwhelmed. It’s been a journey, but I’m learning how important it is to let myself feel and to find ways to cope. I want to share some tips that has helped me deal with homesickness lately.

TIP 1: Talk about your feelings openly with your family or friends!

I used to feel bad about opening up because I didn’t want to burden anyone. I kept telling myself how lucky I was to have the opportunity to study overseas, so I should just be grateful. But I’ve come to realize that it’s okay to feel this way. Moving to a country that feels so foreign is challenging, and it’s only natural to experience moments of sadness or homesickness. It’s all part of adapting, growing, and learning about yourself.

The love and support I’ve received from my family and friends have been my anchor. Knowing that they’re cheering me on, even from afar, has kept me going!! One moment that really stood out to me was when my friend from back home sent me a bouquet of flowers. It wasn’t just the flowers themselves though, it was the thought behind it, a reminder that no matter where I am, the bonds and friendships I have back in my country will forever be there <3

These little reminders help me see that even though I’m far away, I’m never truly alone. Whether it’s a call, a heartfelt message, or l gesture, these moments give me the strength to keep going and make the most of this incredible opportunity!

TIP 2: Memory Corner in your room/dorm!

I decorated my room with pictures of the people I love!! From family to friends, seeing the pictures every day brings a sense of comfort and familiarity. It’s like having a piece of them right here with me, no matter how far away I am ;D

Whenever I feel overwhelmed or lonely, glancing at those photos reminds me of the love and support I have waiting for me. It’s a gentle reassurance that even though I’m in a new and unfamiliar place, I’m not alone in this journey.

Having those pictures around makes my room also feels warmer and more personal.

If you’re feeling homesick, I’d highly recommend creating a little “memory corner” or adding personal touches to your room. It’s a small step, but it can make a big difference in helping you feel more connected to the people who matter most.

TIP 3: Cooking my favourite meals!

Cooking familiar dishes reminded me of the family dinners, festive gatherings I used to have. It gave me comfort especially since I’m not used to the food here in Ireland hehe. Even the simplest meals, It can literally be instant noodles, it makes me happy! Sharing these meals with friends I’ve made here has also been a fun experience! My roommate and I made food from our home country and shared with one another!

Well, if I have to be honest I’m not a good cook but thankfully my friends here are! They invited me over to their house and we shared a lovely dinner together, one of the dishes were one my Mom used to cook often back home, it was definitely my favourite. I WAS SO HAPPY when I saw that dish! Even a simple dish can bring you immense comfort and make your new space feel a little more like home!

In conclusion, homesickness is a feeling no one can really avoid but it’s definitely something you can cope with and gradually get better!! I try to focus on the positives when I’m feeling that way like looking forward to the trips I had planned. Be it visiting my home country or travelling to different countries to meet my friends. Or reminding myself that this is an extremely fortunate experience to have and that everything WILL be worth it at the end despite the negative emotions I feel right now. ❤ At TUS, there are also range of student support services to help you when you feel down or mentally stressed as well as student community. You will never be alone ❤.
