Starting my studies at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in September 2024 marked one of the biggest turning points in my life. I had enrolled in the MSc in Software Design with Cybersecurity, excited to dive into the world of secure coding, encryption, and ethical hacking. But more than that, it was my first-ever international travel that came a whirlwind of emotions.
I still remember the day I landed in Ireland. I was filled with a mix of panic, excitement, and curiosity. Everything was new—the air, the people, the roads, even the silence felt different. But thankfully, TUS Global Office had arranged a shuttle pickup, which took away a huge chunk of my anxiety. The driver was so friendly, and after a warm chat, I was dropped safely at my accommodation.
First Impressions and a Lot of Support
One of the most comforting things during those early days was the support I received from the TUS Global Office. They were always ready with answers, helping me get my student card, bank letters, GNIB appointment, and even guiding me on how to get my Public Services Card. Honestly, without them, I might have felt completely lost.

Professors Who Care
The academic environment at TUS surprised me in the best way. My professors are incredibly friendly, approachable, and supportive. Coming from a background where teachers are usually a bit formal, it was refreshing to see professors here encouraging open discussions, welcoming our questions without judgment, and even initiating fun activities during class to ease the stress.
These little moments helped us bond as a class. Slowly, we began to connect beyond academics—sharing jokes, forming study groups, and supporting each other during assignments. What started as strangers in a classroom slowly turned into peer friendships I now cherish.

Finding My Second Family
One of the most heart warming parts of this journey has been the people I met here—friends who feel like family. We all came from different corners of the world, carrying our own stories, and most of us left our families behind to chase our dreams. But in this shared experience, we found each other.
Whether it’s celebrating birthdays, cooking meals together, walking back home after class, or just sitting around and talking about life, we’ve created a bond that feels safe and real. We support each other through everything, laugh through tough times, and celebrate small wins like a family would.
Getting this kind of friendship is a true blessing, and I feel incredibly grateful to be surrounded by such beautiful souls. TUS brought us together—and I’ll always treasure this unexpected gift of connection.

A Festival of Cultures
TUS isn’t just an academic institution—it’s a celebration of diversity. One of the things I truly love here is how the university embraces and celebrates festivals from different cultures with such warmth and inclusivity.
Being from India, I was thrilled to see vibrant celebrations for Holi and Diwali. Students from all TUS campuses across Ireland gather in the Midlands to join the festivities. The Holi event was filled with colors, laughter, and music—reminding me so much of home. Diwali lit up the night with lamps, traditional sweets, and dance performances that brought the Indian community closer together.

My Takeaway So Far…
If there’s one word to describe my journey at TUS so far, it would be transformative. From being a nervous international student to now feeling part of a vibrant, supportive academic family—I’ve grown in ways I never imagined .
TUS is not just about lectures and labs—it’s about belonging, learning life skills, and building lifelong friendships. I’m truly grateful for taking this leap. And as each day unfolds, I continue to learn, adapt, and celebrate the small victories of student life.
Above all, I’m thankful for the friendships that feel like family, for the professors who inspire me, and for a university that truly welcomes the world with open arms.
