Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty

Statutory Requirements

Section 42 of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014 sets out a statutory obligation for public bodies to have regard for equality and human rights in carrying out their functions. The overarching obligation laid out in the Act requires public bodies to develop and implement three measures:

1. to ensure the elimination of discrimination
2. to promote equality of opportunity and treatment
3. to protect human rights

TUS’s commitment to fulfilling this responsibility extends to all aspects of our operations and all staff and students.

Meeting Our Obligation

The Public Sector Duty involves three key steps:

1. ASSESS equality and human rights issues within the institution;
2. ADDRESS issues identified in step one by setting out plans, policies and actions to be implemented;
3. REPORT on the developments and achievements in relation to the plans, policies and actions implemented in step two.

• Build a respectful and safe campus for students and staff
• Meet our legal obligations and align with sector best practice
