Legal Framework
Key pieces of national legislation include the following. These pieces of legislation prohibit discrimination and harassment on nine equality grounds: Gender, civil status, family status, age, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation and membership of the Traveller community.
- Employability Equality Acts 1998-2015 prohibits discrimination in employment, including recruitment, promotion, pay and other conditions of employment.
- Equal Status Acts 2000-2015 prohibit discrimination in access to and provision of services, including education.
Other relevant pieces of legislation include the following:
- The Institutes of Technology Act 2006 obligates Governing Bodies to promote equality and diversity among students and staff, specifically regarding gender balance and access.
- The Disability Act 2005 obligates public bodies to provide integrated access to services and information to people with disabilities, as well as promoting the employment of people with disabilities.
- The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014 requires that in the performance of their functions public bodies shall have regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and treatment and protect the human rights of staff and service users.

Guidance Documents
The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion office encourages all TUS staff to familiarise themselves with recently published Guidance Documents in relation to Inclusive Committees and Meetings, Promoting Professionally Written Communications, and the Right to Disconnect. Staff are reminded that these are not policy documents but rather sets of guidelines indicating best practice to support equity, fairness and staff wellbeing.
