History of PASS

PASS has been running at TUS since 2009. As of February 2023, PASS resides in the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation and Development (CPID).

PASS has drawn on experience from successful SI/PASS/PAL programmes at the University of Manchester, Bournemouth University and Atlantic Technological University. Additionally, PASS benefits from an association with the European Centre for SI-PASS based at Lund University in Sweden. The European Centre for SI-PASS offers regular training for staff interested in learning more about this model. SI-PASS Supervisor training was held on the TUS Athlone campus from June 10th to 12th, 2025.

PASS evolved from Supplemental Instruction (SI), a programme developed at the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1973 to address attrition rates. Since then, the model has expanded to include over 1,500 higher education institutions across more than 30 countries. The SI-PASS journey in Europe began in 1991 at Kingston University in the United Kingdom. Three years later Lund University in Sweden embraced SI-PASS within its Engineering and Science departments to enhance educational quality. Since then, SI-PASS has seen steady growth, particularly in Northern Europe. Today, over 75 higher education institutes across 12 countries offer SI-PASS schemes in Europe. Click on the following link for more information on PASS around the world SI-PASS around the world | European Centre for SI-PASS
