Course Overview

The primary aim of the BSc Pharmacy Technician programme is to advance the skills and knowledge of the qualified pharmacy technician. Furthermore, it seeks to enable the graduate to use his/her skills as a pharmacy technician to promote pharmacy practice in the area of pharmaceutical care of the patient and ultimately, to provide additional skills to the pharmacy technician in the areas of clinical pharmacy, medicines management, purchasing, clinical governance, ethics and aseptic practices. This will enable the graduate to consider career development in additional areas.

Students will attend lectures at TUS Monday to Wednesday and attend pharmacy placement on Thursday and Friday throughout the academic year. Placement is organised by TUS in conjunction with the student. As well as placement the students will undertake a dissertation which allows them to delve into the research world for the first time. Participation in conferences, poster competitions and lectures by guest speakers from the pharmacy industry will ensure that students are well grounded in all areas of work available to pharmacy technicians

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants must have successfully completed the NFQ level 6 Higher Certificate in Pharmacy Technician in TUS or another Irish University.

Applicants who currently hold a pharmacy technician qualification, obtained through the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) or equivalent qualification, and 2 years post-qualification experience as a pharmacy technician in Ireland may apply for entry through recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Further Education/Prior Learning Applicants

Applications will also be considered for Direct/Advanced Entry from those with a FETAC Level 5/6 qualification (or equivalent) and/or relevant prior learning. Click here to learn more.

Course Modules

  • Medicines Management

    Credits: 5

    Medicines management encompasses the entire way that medicines are selected, procured, delivered, prescribed, administered and reviewed to optimise the contribution that medicines make to producing informed and desired outcomes of patient care. The aim of this module is provide students with an overview of all aspects of medicines management and how it pertains to the role of the pharmacy technician.

  • Medicines Optimisation

    Credits: 5

    Medicines optimisation is defined as a person centred approach to safe and effective medicines use, to ensure people obtain the best possible outcomes from their medicines. Medicines optimisation considers the value which medicines deliver to ensure they are clinically-effective and cost-effective. The aim of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of medicines optimisation and to impart the key skills and knowledge necessary to integrate medicines optimisation principles into their practice as pharmacy technicians.

  • Clinical Pharmacy I & II

    Credits: 5

    Clinical pharmacy is the science and practice of rational medication use while pharmaceutical care is the responsible provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve a patient’s quality of life. This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the use of drugs in patient-centred care. This module focuses on the pharmacological areas outlined in the indicative syllabus. The remaining pharmacological areas are covered in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Care II.

  • Clinical Pharmacy II

    Credits: 5

  • Clinical Governance & Ethics

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to enable students to gain an understanding of the principles of clinical governance and ethics in pharmacy practice. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the requirements of ensuring improved quality of service, and safeguarding high standards of patient safety and ethics in decision-making, whilst maintaining excellence in clinical care. The student should be able to understand the role of the health professional in relation to decision-making processes, from a legal and ethical perspective.

  • Research Dissertation

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the pharmacy technician students with the opportunity to develop research skills pertinent to working on a pharmacy practice research team. Pharmacy technicians may apply the acquired skills to their role in the provision of quality and up-to-date pharmacy/pharmacist support, by implementing evidence based best practice. They should be in a position to deliver on the collection and reporting of quality research data necessary for the ongoing continued improvement of the service. Additionally, this module will prepare pharmacy technician students for advanced studies, should they wish to pursue further education at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

  • Advanced Pharmacy Skills I

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to ensure pharmacy technicians in community, hospital, regulation, industry, education and wholesale divisions constantly strive to update themselves as the framework for pharmacy practice is changing. Advanced pharmacy skills looks at a unique way of empowering the pharmacy technician. There are many opportunities for pharmacy technicians to engage in new ways of working outside the developed areas which are covered elsewhere within this course.

  • Advanced Pharmacy Skills II

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to ensure pharmacy technicians in community, hospital, regulation, industry, education and wholesale divisions constantly strive to update themselves as the framework for pharmacy practice is changing. Advanced pharmacy skills looks at a unique way of empowering the pharmacy technician.   • Aseptic Practices

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students with an overview of aseptic practices and techniques and how they relate to the role of the pharmacy technician. The module aims to equip students with the theoretical underpinnings of aseptic practices while developing their practical skills in the aseptic manipulation of pharmaceutical preparations.

  • Pharmacy Purchasing & Sales

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of every aspect of the procurement, storage, distribution and sale of medicines in both community and hospital pharmacy.

  • Professional Placement I

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the student with a structured approach to career progression. The student will undertake a period of placement in a community or hospital pharmacy. The module will allow the student to enhance their pharmacy technician skills and knowledge in a professional practice setting.

  • Professional Placement II

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the student with a structured approach to career progression. The student will undertake a period of placement in a community or hospital pharmacy. The module will allow the student to enhance their pharmacy technician skills and knowledge in a professional practice setting.
