Course Overview

The MA in Strategic Health and Wellbeing Leadership prepares you to drive meaningful change in community, organisational, and policy settings. You’ll develop strategic, leadership, and research skills to design and implement high-impact wellbeing initiatives, with a strong focus on evidence-based practice, behavioural change, and emerging national and global health trends.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the programme explores mental, physical, emotional, social, and organisational wellbeing. Through TUS’s active learning model, you’ll engage with strategic planning, policy development, leadership and management theory, and contemporary wellbeing trends, equipping you to influence change across corporate, public sector, healthcare, sporting, and community environments. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in integrative wellbeing practice, from digital health innovations to sustainable wellbeing strategies.

You can tailor your studies with a 30-credit capstone research dissertation or an action research project, complemented by practical project management skills to help you design, implement, and evaluate wellbeing initiatives. The programme also emphasises personal and professional development, with opportunities to engage in guest lectures, site visits, conferences, and collaborations with industry and community partners.

Graduates will be ready for leadership roles in health policy, corporate wellness, healthcare, sporting, and community wellbeing. Delivered in Limerick city, the programme provides an ideal base—especially for international students—to explore Ireland’s rich cultural and historical sites. All classes take place over two full days per week, offering flexibility for those balancing study with work or other commitments.

What are the entry requirements?

(a) A minimum honours bachelor degree (Level 8) in a related discipline.

Or

(b) A minimum honours bachelor degree (Level 8) in any discipline with minimum two years, relevant work experience and/or ability, evidenced by an RPL portfolio of prior experience and learning

Or

(c) A minimum ordinary bachelor degree (Level 7) in any discipline with a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience and/or ability, evidenced by an RPL portfolio of prior experience and learning

Or

(d) Equivalent Qualifications. Applicants with equivalent qualifications on the European and International frameworks will also be considered. International students must evidence a proficiency in English language for example IELTS 6.0

An interview may form part of the selection process.

    Credits: 30

    Conduct independent, original research that advances knowledge in health and wellbeing. This module equips you with the skills to design, execute, and critically evaluate a research study using robust methodologies and ethical practices. You’ll engage with extensive literature, analyse findings, and contribute new insights to the field. The dissertation culminates in a written thesis and viva voce presentation, preparing you for both academic and professional research roles.

  • Action Research Project

    Credits: 30

    Apply research to real-world practice by designing and implementing a practical, evidence-based wellbeing initiative. This module follows an action research approach, allowing you to identify challenges, test solutions, and refine strategies in a live setting. You’ll develop skills in collaborative problem-solving, data collection, and evaluation, ensuring your project delivers meaningful impact while preparing you for leadership roles in health and wellbeing innovation.

Graduates of the MA in Strategic Health and Wellbeing Leadership can pursue careers in public health, policy, corporate wellbeing, sport, and community health. Opportunities include:

  • Public Sector & Policy – Roles in the HSE, Department of Health, Healthy Ireland, Sláintecare, and Local Authorities, focusing on health promotion, workplace wellbeing, and public health strategy.
  • Corporate Wellbeing & Employee Health – Wellbeing managers, EAP consultants, behavioural health coaches, and corporate wellness specialists,
  • Sport & Physical Activity – Positions with Sport Ireland, National Governing Bodies for Sport, Active Disability Ireland, GAA Healthy Clubs Programme, and Local Sports Partnerships, promoting inclusive health and physical activity.
  • Community & Social Wellbeing – Roles in Healthy Cities & Counties, Family Resource Centres, Traveller Health organisations, and the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) supporting social inclusion and community wellbeing.
  • Education & Research – Further study at PhD level, research roles in universities and policy institutes, or teaching and training in health and wellbeing leadership.

This degree prepares you to lead, innovate, and create lasting impact in the evolving field of health and wellbeing—at local, national, and international levels.

Upon successful completion of this programme, graduates have the opportunity to complete Level 9/10 programmes here at TUS or elsewhere.
