Course Overview

The aim of the Higher Diploma in Business in Operations Management is to give learners an opportunity to acquire an integrated understanding of the operation and strategy of Quality and Lean Management and to develop transferable and transversal skills. The programme is designed to offer the learner an opportunity to gain a detailed knowledge of the theories and effective practice of Business and Operations Management which the learner can use in a wide variety of Business and Operations Management roles to improve organisational and business efficiencies and effectiveness.

  • Semester 1

    Operations and Quality Management

    This module introduces the principles of operations management, including supply chain strategy, logistics, process design, and inventory control. It also explores quality management frameworks such as quality assurance, continuous improvement (Kaizen), and lean methodologies. Learners will understand how to streamline operations for efficiency while embedding sustainability into production and service systems.


    Project Finances

    Focused on the financial skills needed to manage and assess business projects, this module covers budgeting processes, financial planning, cost control, and performance evaluation. Learners will explore the role of the financial manager in strategic planning, apply models to control costs, and assess the financial viability of operations. Practical tools for investment appraisal and financial risk analysis are also introduced.


    Business Ethics and Sustainability

    This module examines the role of ethical decision-making and sustainable practices in modern business. It explores how ethical frameworks, corporate social responsibility, and environmental considerations influence business strategy and stakeholder relationships. Students will critically evaluate real-world ethical dilemmas and understand how sustainability can drive competitive advantage.


    Semester2

    Applied Pratice/ Crafting and Executing Strategy

    Learners will develop strategic thinking skills by examining how organisations formulate and implement business strategy. Topics include competitive positioning, strategic analysis, business model innovation, and the global business environment. The module emphasises practical decision-making, scenario planning, and alignment of strategy with organisational values and goals.


    Decision Making and Business Analytics

    This module explores the tools and techniques used to support data-driven decision-making. Learners will interpret financial statements, assess key performance indicators, and analyse business data using modern analytics techniques. It blends finance with operational insight, enabling students to apply quantitative and qualitative data to solve complex business problems.


    Managing People and Organisational Change

    Focusing on the human side of operations, this module explores organisational structures, culture, and the challenges of leading change. Students will develop skills in communication, conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement, and managing resistance to change. It prepares learners to support workforce transformation and lead strategic HR initiatives.

  • Minimum Entry Requirements

     

    A minimum ordinary bachelor degree (Level 7) in any discipline with minimum three years relevant work experience and/or ability, evidenced by an RPL portfolio of prior experience and learning.

  • This programme will be delivered online though our virtual learning environment.

  • Each 10-credit module normally equates to approximately 200 total learning hours. Total learning hours include the time spent in class, such as lectures, tutorials, and practical elements, as well as time spent working independently outside of college.

    The balance between these varies by discipline and level of study, and learners should be aware that workload will increase at particular times, especially when assignments are due.

  • The programme is assessed through a combination of continuous assessments and exams.
