Course Overview

The International Construction Measurement Standard, ICMS3 has introduced Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) as a fundamental component of construction measurement. Accurate generation of carbon assessments remains a challenging domain. This program will provide learners with solid foundation of the principles of WLCA, as well as the requirements, rules and techniques necessary for the ICMS implementation.

What are the entry requirements?

An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification

or

A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience

Special Case Registrations:

Prospective participants who do not meet the entry requirements for the programme detailed above, but who may qualify for admission by meeting certain other equivalent criteria, including workplace experience, should apply to the Department of Flexible Learning Office using the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedure for consideration.

HCI Pillar 3 Funding 

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA. We would encourage you to read the criteria prior to making an application, to ensure you are eligible to apply. Details can be found  Here

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

 

Course Content

  • 1. Introduction to ICMS-3 and ICMS-3 Carbon Reporting: Principles, Structure, framework, levels, attributes and values. Life cycle cost treatment, carbon emissions treatment. Elemental Cost Planning Considerations

    2. Whole Life Carbon Assessment: Initial considerations, types of projects and assessments,

    3. Framework for WLCA: Scope, Reference Study Period, Element categories, quantities, scenarios, Data source choice and usage.

    4. Assessment and Reporting Requirements: Pre-construction, construction, and operational stages. Energy use, water use, end of life, system boundaries. Reporting metrics, and reporting templates.

  • Wednesday; 6.30pm to 8.30pm (subject to change)

    This course will be delivered fully online. Lectures are recorded and available for listen back.

    The installation of the software and license configuration will be covered in the course.

  • Online with lectures and practical sessions in an online, virtual classroom 2 hours weekly.

    Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.  The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due

  • Coursework assessments include two practical assignments which include an essay in week 3 and an individual project in week 8

    Assessments are designed with tiered activities of varying difficulty. These are individual assessments, however peer collaboration is actively encouraged.
