Course Overview

The aim of the Certificate in Greyhound Welfare and Husbandry programme is to provide people who work in the greyhound industry with the training, knowledge and education in greyhound welfare and husbandry from inception to end of life.

  • Greyhound Welfare & Husbandry (10 ECTS)

    On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

    1. Describe the welfare legislation, welfare regulations and code of practice which owners, breeders and trainers must be cognisant of while active within the greyhound industry.
    2. Display a level of knowledge and competence in the care and welfare of greyhounds.
    3. Explain the pre-mating, mating (stud dog and bitch), whelping process and associated care of the greyhound bitch and pup.
    4. Describe the rearing and pre-training process for a greyhound.
    5. Study and explain the importance of physical exercise including rest and greyhound husbandry for the racing greyhound.
    6. Develop a greyhound appropriate nutritious racing diet and understand the correct nutrition requirements for a racing greyhound based on the theory of nutrition.
    7. Study and describe kennel layouts, gallops and structures and learn different training routines from established leading greyhound trainers.
    8. Explain and prepare a greyhound for retirement from active racing and/or rehoming.

     

  • Mature applicants (i.e. aged 23 years on 1st January of year of entry for admission in September)

    The course is aimed at current participants in the greyhound industry, with the objective of increasing their knowledge of the care and welfare of the greyhounds that they work with.

  • Lectures – 15 weeks x 2.5 hours per week in a blended learning approach

    Site Visits – 4 site visits during the duration of the program TBC

    The proposed delivery schedule is subject to change.

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • €1,000* Funded by Greyhound Racing Ireland.

    75% of the fee, equating to €750 will be covered by Greyhound Racing Ireland for eligible participants.

    Funded students to pay €250.
