Click hereThe Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Law at Technological University of the Shannon is a flexible, part-time, fully online Level 8 degree designed to prepare students for both professional legal careers and a wide range of roles where legal knowledge, regulation, compliance, and critical thinking are increasingly essential. The programme responds directly to the changing nature of legal practice in Ireland and internationally, where law is no longer confined to traditional solicitor and barrister pathways, but is deeply embedded across business, technology, public administration, compliance, and regulation.
This degree provides a full, academically rigorous legal education while placing a strong emphasis on practical, applied skills and workplace readiness. Students develop a deep understanding of the Irish legal system and all core areas of law, including constitutional law, contract, criminal law, tort, company law, land law, equity and trusts, EU law, human rights, and evidence. At the same time, the programme recognises that the legal profession is undergoing profound change due to technology, digitalisation, AI, and new business models. For this reason, the curriculum deliberately integrates contemporary areas such as legal technology, data protection and GDPR, alternative dispute resolution, and professional legal practice.
A distinctive feature of this programme is its strong alignment with the core subjects required for professional legal qualification in Ireland. The degree is designed to cover the full suite of subjects typically examined in the FE1 examinations, providing a clear and structured pathway for students who wish to progress to become solicitors or barristers. At the same time, it also prepares graduates for a much broader range of careers in legal administration, compliance, regulation, corporate governance, public service, and business.
The programme is particularly suited to mature learners, career changers, and those already in employment who need a flexible and accessible route to a law degree without compromising academic standards. Delivered fully online, the programme combines live online lectures, structured independent learning, applied assessments, and skills-based activities. Throughout the programme, students develop core graduate attributes such as legal reasoning, critical thinking, research and writing, problem-solving, digital literacy, and professional communication.
By the time they graduate, students will not only understand the law, but also how it operates in practice, how legal services are delivered in modern organisations, and how law interacts with business, technology, and society. Graduates emerge with a future-proofed qualification, ready for further professional training or for immediate progression into a wide range of legal, regulatory, and commercial roles.
